mom movies

Not being one for 'chick flicks', I do find myself enjoying them more in my ancient years. I don't think I will ever go for the romance novel type of movie, but a few have caught my eye. These are the movies I wish to share with you eager reader ;)

NEW :: kate & leopold :: i could just look at Hugh Jackman for hours in this movie. While not the best I've ever seen it is worth a few viewings - the DVD is worth it :) Meg Ryan is cool too, but it's a pretty standard 'Meg Ryan' love story kinda thing that starting to get a bit tired. Similar to 'When Harry Met Sally' (an all time great) and 'Joe vs the Volcano'.

:: dxxx :: not many movies succeed in getting me to cry. the music alone makes me cry now that i associate it with this movie. quiet, passionate, thoght provoking. what would you do for true love?

:: xxxxx :: yep another love story, except this one is on drugs. absinth to be exact. while there are a few raunchy sex sceans not to graphic but you definitely get the picture (no bare skin) but excellent imagry, design, plot, story, costumes...

:: bridget jones diary :: omg, they made a movie about me! well, ok not 'me' but basically me.. 30 something, single rethinking life and how it should be. yep, she's more interesting but the basics are all there.

:: city of angels :: not many movies succeed in getting me to cry. the music alone makes me cry now that i associate it with this movie. quiet, passionate, thoght provoking. what would you do for true love?

:: moulin rouge :: yep another love story, except this one is on drugs. absinth to be exact. while there are a few raunchy sex sceans not to graphic but you definitely get the picture (no bare skin) but excellent imagry, design, plot, story, costumes...

Bridget Jones's Diary bridget jones's diary

Not only was the casting great, the story (not so) tactifully funny - the term 'side splitting' comes to mind.. I have never split my sides, but it's definitely sounds better than "I laughed so hard I nearly pee'd my pants" which I did. (Not pee'd my pants, but laughed so hard I nearly did.)

Everyone knows the feeling that no other can possibly understand how They feel. Especially when the 'other' is your family that has a tendency to nag you about "are you dating anyone", "you know, I really wish you would go out more" and the like. Married people just seem to completely forget what life was like for them Before getting married. How do you explain that you don't mind the idea of having a mate, you just don't want the loosers that you have to choose from. Are you being to picky? Is it a sign that there is something wrong with You and it's really your own fault? Everyone has these moments, and that is what is so great about this movie. It shows them. They are not candy coated, they arn't dressed up nor are excuses made for them. How many of you can openly admit to the late night news year eve drunken cry and song fest (alone). You get it in all it's vodka swilling, smoke hazy glory.. It's GREAT! You just have to sing along with Bridget! And be embarrassed for her, and cry with her, and and... just see the movie, you won't regret it.

Note: I got the DVD for this one and found out, while reviewing the 'special features' that, while the movie is based on the book, the book is based on a small newspaper article from England. A column ran (weekly?) that was Bridget's diary entries for all to read, right down to the alcohol intake, number of cigarettes smoked and current weight. They picked the 'best' columns and duplicated them on the DVD for your viewing pleasure, don't miss them - definitely worth the read. If I can find out more about how this originated I will post back with more info.

From the box
Screen stars Renee Zellweger (Nurse Betty, Jerry Maguire) and Hugh Grant (Four Weddings And A Funeral, Notting Hill) craft memorable performances in a delightfully funny comedy that looks at the ups and downs of modern romance! A busy career woman approaching a "certain age", uncomfortably unmarried Bridget (Zellweger) decides to turn over a new page in her life by channeling her thoughts, opinions and insecurities into a journal that becomes a hilarious chronicle of her adventures! Soon, the irrepressible Bridget somehow manages to become the center of attention between a guy who's too good to be true (Grant) and another who's so wrong for her, he could be just right (Colin Firth - Shakespeare In Love)! Based on the best-selling book, Bridget Jones's Diary is another acclaimed crowd pleaser from the hitmakers of Four Weddings And A Funeral and Notting Hill!

[where exactly do they find the people to write these things? this is actually worse than the one off Christine! geez.. do they even have to see the movies? I'm not saying I can do better, but then I'm not paid to do this either.]

Moulin Rougecity of angels

From the box
What if angels walked among us, and one of them fell in love with one of us! Two of the brightest stars in the Hollywood constellation spark the biggest romance under the heavens in City Of Angels, "A lyrical, unabashedly romantic film [that] earns its wings" (David Ansen, Newsweek). Nicholas Cage is Seth, and angel who must decide if he'll forsake his immortality and become human - on the chance that the woman of his dreams might love him. That woman is Maggie (Meg Ryan), a pragmatic heart surgeon who doesn't believe in angels... until she meets Seth. Will love be their mutual destiny? Will they take the risks that shape that destiny? The choice is theirs to make. The movie is yours to see, share and sweep you away.

[ack, another quote filled snip that leaves one wondering if this person slept thru the movie...]

Moulin Rougemoulin rouge

"Welcome to a celebration of TRUTH, BEAUTY, FREEDOM, and above all things, LOVE."

LOVE
is a story about
LOVE
music is the food of
LOVE
nothing matters but
LOVE

The greatest thing
you'll ever learn
is to love
and be loved
in return.

Welcome to a garden of earthly delights...

Moulin Rouge is the third feature in a style we've dubbed the "Red Curtain" trilogy - a theatricalized cinema style we launched with 'Strictly Ballroom', developed with 'Romeo + Juliet', and now conclude with 'Moulin Rouge'. A simple, even naive, story based on a primary myth is set in a world that is distant, exotic, ad yet familiar. The audience participates in the telling of the story through a device. In 'Strictly Ballroom' that device is dance, while 'Romeo + Juliet' uses the language of Shakespeare. Moulin Rouge is told through song...
[that was from the box ;) for the rest you will need to buy the DVD]

Originally, I was not that interested in this movie. Oh, it looked mildly intersting. Probably worth a look, should the situation present itself. Boy was I wrong. Then my daughter got hooked on one of the songs in her Jazz class. 'Diamonds (are a girls bes friend)', then she begged for the cd. Of course she got it ;)... then I started liking the music.. then, one cold, dark, night - I sucked it up and paid pay-per-view. Best 3 bucks ever spent! Ok, this is one you Have to pay attention to if you have any desire to 'get' it.. a few drinks before might not hurt either.

It is a story of love. It is a story of fighting for what you believe in regardless of anything else. It is a story of not giving up, and loss. It is a story of dreams.
