March - April 2003 rants

I'm so tired.

So, Ricky Lake is on tv right now. Don't ask me why. It just is. Not the point. It's about 'Gold Diggers' meaning men who date women for their money. So this guy brings his friend on Ricky Lake to try and get her to understand that they guy she's been dating for the past 5 years is using her. Supposedly they have copies of note's this boyfriend sent that were not very nice and all that. Sooo, I'm watching and thinking the chick is familiar but not sure why. Then they bring they guy 'Kim' on and it dawns on me that I saw them on Jerry Springer the other day. The guy likes dressing like a woman and promised to stop dressing like a woman to make the chick happy and so she'd stay with him. Ohh Kayy.. Work the sleazy talk show circut much? I wonder how much they get paid. So sad. This is why I prefer the "judge" type of shows. Judge Judy kicks butt.
Now That's entertainment.

So, I've been sad this weekend. Friday was the series finale for FarScape on SciFi.

While the episode was great on it's own as a Season Finale Cliffhanger, which is what it was intended to be when filmed, it blew as a Series Finale. I actually cried at the end when John and Aryn were turned into crystals (or whatever) it would have been nicer if they could have skipped that part but then it wouldn't be FarScape if they had. It ended with "To Be Continued" and a black screen appended from SciFi with a very lame 'Thank You' to the actors, creators and viewers. I got yer 'Thanks' right here buddy. Real 'Thanks' would have been to continue with the 5th year as originally agreed to, or not even give the OK if they were having so many financial problems. The 4th year was originally written (so I've read) to conclude at the end of the 4th year (just finished) and SciFi's OK on the 5th year late forced them to rewrite, only to be told on the last day of shooting the final ep for the 4th year that the show was cancelled. How Frelling Stupid of them. How incredibly frelling stupid. FarScape is still rated the best original Science Fiction show and has won awards for itself and the SciFi channel, sure it was logical to cancell the show. Pure dren and absolutely brainless. The creators and actors promise to find a way to get the rest of it out. If not via another channel (Hello WB, your great for picking up these shows and you need something to replace Buffy now!) then it what ever other media they can. There are talks of cartoons (yech, maybe as an offshoot as I'm sure I and my kid would enjoy it but not to finish the story I want Ben and Aryn and Chianna and Dargo and even Granny, Scorpy and Rygel in full color not panatone) mini-series and movies. The only one that sounds viable would be a mini-series on SciFi as that wouldn't have to backtrack to much to cover the beginning of the loose ends they need to close.

While looking for the 'Awards' to link up to, I found a 'farewell' page SciFi so graciously put up. [ Farewell FarScape ] it starts off "In honor of the end of Farscape, the SCI FI Channel's longest-running original series" Oh Please. More Dren. Spare us. They have published their SciFi Mag Farewell article on the site however [ Farewell article ] it's a good read. Great comments, especially from Browder "Or, I'll be writing something that takes place in East Texas or something and an alien will walk through the door. I haven't quite gotten Farscape out of my system." I hope you never do either. I know the fans won't.

Riverworld premiered on Saturday on SciFi. As usual, the movie has only a bare resemblance to books. You'd think by now they would manage to get a clue and stop 'dumming down' these stories. LOTR and even Dune (not so much Children of Dune) should have proven to them by now that the public really isn't as stupid as they seem to insist we are. The reason SciFi got an audience in the first place was because it wasn't the WB or FOX. By a clue people, you've effectively ruined the best channel on the air.

On the other hand the show, if taken on it's own merit, wasn't horrible. It was an entertaining watch. They should have been a bit clearer that it was a pilot premier and not actually a movie with an ending however. I was quite confused when it was over and didn't find out that it wasn't a complete movie until I found a website (not SciFi related) [ Not For Hire ] seems a bit new but well done so far. I liked the section that points out the differences, it also has a forum. It was interesting to learn that Riverworld was (or did?) premier in January 2003 - I don't recall that happening.

Speaking of Dune, I understand that you can't get every nuance from a book to cross over into a movie, even a 6 hour mini-series, but they did a much better job with Dune than they did with Children of Dune. They seem to have borrowed a page from LOTR with the ending but how can we be sure that they will come back with a 3rd mini-series to finish the story? With SciFi's history of canceling, I won't be holding my breath. The visuals are great on both as is the cast (though I would have preferred to have the original Stillgar and Jessica back) they did get most of the rest of the cast, re-watching Dune (right now) it's cool how much Paul (the real actor Alec Newman) aged to match the character. He does look 10 years older even though it was only about 2 years from the release of Dune to the filming of Children of Dune. (Checking SciFi's site for dates is ridiculous, don't they believe in completing a site once they start it? I know Dune premiered late 2000 and SciFi gave the 'go ahead' on Children of Dune late 2001 (December I think).
Interesting Note: The actor, Karel Dobry, that played Kynes/Liet in Dune plays a different role in Children of Dune as Korba, one of Muad'dib's priests.

Business as usual. Polished up the template. Work work work and all.

Oh! Read 'Bridget Jones: the edge of reason'. Part 2 of 'Bridget Jones's Diary. Overall gotta say it's a good book. Def worth the read.
